India’s first E85 fuel dispensing station has been inaugurated

In a significant milestone for India's clean energy and ethanol-blending journey, the country's first E85 fuel dispensing station has been inaugurated in Delhi. The launch marks the beginning of commercial availability of high-ethanol fuel for flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) and represents a major step toward reducing India's dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The E85 fuel dispensing facility was inaugurated by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, at an Indian Oil fuel station in the national capital. E85 fuel contains 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, making it one of the highest ethanol-blended automotive fuels introduced in India to date.

A Major Push for India's Biofuel Mission

The introduction of E85 aligns with the Government of India's broader strategy to accelerate ethanol adoption, strengthen energy security, reduce crude oil imports, and lower vehicular emissions. As one of the world's largest importers of crude oil, India has been actively promoting ethanol blending to enhance self-reliance in the transportation sector.

Industry experts believe that the launch of E85 fuel will encourage automobile manufacturers to expand their portfolio of flex-fuel vehicles capable of operating on higher ethanol blends.

Lower Fuel Cost for Consumers

One of the biggest attractions of E85 fuel is its pricing. The fuel has been introduced at approximately ₹82.12 per litre, around ₹20 cheaper than conventional E20 petrol in Delhi. The government expects the price advantage to support faster adoption among eligible vehicle owners while promoting cleaner transportation.

However, E85 fuel can only be used in specially designed Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs). Standard petrol vehicles are not compatible with such high ethanol concentrations without suitable modifications.

Opportunities for India's Ethanol Industry

The launch of E85 fuel is expected to create fresh demand for domestically produced ethanol, benefiting sugar mills, grain-based distilleries, ethanol producers, and farmers. Increased ethanol consumption can generate additional income opportunities for the agricultural sector while supporting the government's vision of a circular bioeconomy.

For India's ethanol industry, the move signals the beginning of a new growth phase that extends beyond E20 blending and opens pathways toward higher ethanol fuel adoption, similar to successful biofuel markets such as Brazil.

Expansion Plans Already Underway

The government has announced plans to rapidly expand the availability of E85 fuel. Hundreds of dispensing stations are expected to be rolled out across major cities, including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, over the coming months. The long-term target is to establish thousands of ethanol fuel stations across the country, supporting the nationwide adoption of flex-fuel mobility.
